Mum bitten by rabies-riddled bat while enjoying quiet evening outside her house

A mum was bitten by a rabies-riddled bat as she enjoyed a quiet evening sat on the porch outside her house.

Camilla Schumacher was attacked as she sat with her daughter Monica and her pit bull Kane by their home in Lincoln County, Oklahoma, last Monday.

She saw the bat as it was still biting her and realised it had left two bloodied holes on her ankle.

Her protective pet, Kane, quickly grabbed the bat in its jaws before Camilla slapped it out so it didn't harm her pet.

The bat was sent to a lab for analysis while Kane was taken to the vet who confirmed the dog's up to date vaccinations had been life-saving.

Meanwhile, Camilla faces a month and a half of quarantine incase she tests positive for rabies, while seeking treatment for the dangerous disease, the Metro reports.

She is telling her story to warn people of the dangers.

Camilla said: She said: "Kane was being protective. She so sweet and so loyal.

"I think, maybe, it’s a godly thing that this happened so a message could get out."

The NHS says: "Rabies is a rare but very serious infection of the brain and nerves.

"It's usually caught from the bite or scratch of an infected animal, most often a dog.

"Rabies is almost always fatal once symptoms appear, but treatment before this is very effective.

"There's also a vaccine for people at risk of being infected."
