Mum baffled after friend complains about daughter's outfit at birthday party

One mum was left baffled after her friend complained about her daughter's outfit - because she was wearing a football kit.

On Mumsnet, the woman admitted she was surprised to receive a text from her friend - who was holding a birthday party for her one-year-old.

Due to lockdown restrictions, the mum had agreed to drop off the tot's present in a specific time slot, and they weren't invited indoors.

But her friend complained afterwards that her daughter wasn't in "proper party attire" because she had just attended football and hadn't got changed.

Asking for advice, the mum laid out the situation and asked fellow parents for their advice.

She wrote: "It was my friends daughters 1st birthday yesterday. She had given everyone set time to show up for dropping off presents and to see her [daughter].

"My family was assigned 12-12:30, I text her during the week to say we would be there but would be slightly later as my [daughter's] football finished at 12.

"She changed the time to 12:30-1 which I said was no problem.

"After football, we drove to her house and my [daughter] was still in her football strip. Today she has texted me saying 'Hi I wasn't going to say anything as I didn't want to make you feel bad but I was very upset that ....... showed up to ..... 1st birthday party in her football strip given the fact I changed your time to accommodate her football.'

"'It would of been nice if you could have made an effort and got her changed into proper party attire.'

"I still haven't replied as I don't know what to say. Was I being unreasonable by not changing [my daughter] out of her football strip?"

In the comments, the mum added that there was "no mention of a party" and it was just an opportunity to say hello and drop the present off.

The post provoked a strong debate, as many-sided with the poster that they hadn't done anything wrong.

One wrote: "Your friend is bonkers. Ignore. Then remind her in a few years and watch her cringe."

Another replied: "Hahaha wow that's crazy! I'm sure her 1-year-old dd was very upset that her dress code was not adhered to."

But another had a different perspective, as they replied: "Giving her all the benefit of the doubt that I can, is it a hygiene issue? Was she concerned about the muddy kit near the baby?"

"If she's a good friend I'd text back; 'Are you okay? Seems unlike you to be upset over what my dd wears....'.And see what she comes back with," advised one person.

Luckily, all's well that ends wall, as the original poster revealed they've managed to sort it out.

She wrote: "We took the dogs for a walk and she brought up her [daughter's] birthday and how well she thought the day went.

"I said to her I was really upset with her message about [the] football kit as we had gone out of our way to drop off the present.

"She was really apologetic about it and said it had all just got to her that her daughter didn't have the 1st birthday that she had planned.

"Before her [daughter] was born she had planned to get her christened on her first birthday as she thought all the covid restrictions would be away by now.

"Told her that when she has class parties for her dd a lot of the children will show up in sports clothes she laughed and thanked me for the warning."
