Mum astonished by 'ungrateful' complaint from other parents after daughter's party

If you're a parent, then you'll know that there can be a lot of politics around children's birthday parties - with one of the biggest points of debate being whether or not to invite the whole class to the occasion, or just a few select friends.

However, it seems one mum has encountered a new problem, after throwing her daughter a party recently to mark her fifth birthday.

The unnamed mum has since turned to the internet for some advice on her situation, after she discovered fellow parents had been making 'comments' of displeasure after the party.

Taking to BabyCentre, the woman explained that 12 of the children invited to the party didn't RSVP, so she wasn't sure if they were coming.

However, on the day of the party five of the children who didn't RSVP turned up.

The parent told how she'd made party bags up for those who had responded to the invite but unfortunately didn't prepare any spare ones.

As such the five extra children didn't get party bags and their parents weren't pleased about it.

She wrote: "So it was my daughter's party last weekend. 12 people didn't rsvp. 5 of those 12 people just turned up on the day.

"Since her party, I've heard a few comments from those parents that they aren't happy their child didn’t get a party bag. Am I being unreasonable to not of made up 12 extra party bags just in case?"

The parent admitted that it was the first party she's ever thrown for her child, so she wasn't sure what the etiquette was for party bags without RSVPs.

"Everyone went home with some cake as I had enough of that," she added.

"Do I buy some more now as a goodwill gesture?"

Dozens of people were quick to respond to the mum, telling her she hadn't done anything wrong and claiming the other parents were just being 'ungrateful'.

One replied: "If they say it to your face you can just explain, otherwise I'd just ignore it. Or mention it to another mum to spread the word. I wouldn't bother getting gifts now Probably wouldn't have more than 1 extra bag if it was me."

Another commented: "Imagine being such an ungrateful miserable sod that you cared or commented your kid did not get a party bag after someone provided a party & entertainment for your child that you chose to go to. I would feel sorry for them that their lives are not more fulfilling and move on."

A third thought: "Having done loads of class parties, I now provide loads of extra food and party bags (only basic paper bags with sweets and cake). So many people don't reply but turn up anyway, loads also bring unexpected siblings! But it's not your fault they didn't get a party bag and it's mean-spirited of them to whinge about it when they didn't even rsvp. I'd ignore it, definitely don’t pander to them by going out and getting more."
