Mum appears in court charged with murder of infant son in Belfast

A mother was remanded in custody charged with killing her baby son and the attempted murder of another young child in North Belfast earlier this week.

Two-month-old Liam O’Keefe died during an incident at Brompton Park in the Ardoyne area on Tuesday.

Despite the efforts of the emergency services the baby was pronounced dead at the scene.

Another young child, who is two-and-a-half, was injured in the same incident and remains in hospital in a stable condition.

Romanian-born Raluca Tagani was held after police and paramedics discovered the children suffering from stab wounds shortly after 8pm on Tuesday having been alerted by a relative who was concerned for their welfare.

Tagani, of no fixed abode, was also taken to hospital for treatment for injuries.

She was later arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder and was transferred to police custody for questioning after being released from hospital.

She appeared before Belfast Magistrates' Court on Friday morning, July 30, where several members of the O'Keefe family watched the short three minute hearing remotely.

Dressed in a long-sleeved grey tracksuit jumper, she showed no emotion as she watched the court proceedings via videolink.

Through an interpreter, Tagani nodded and replied yes when asked if she understood the charges against her.

Defence barrister Sean Mullan told the court his client was not making an application for bail.

Tagani was remanded in custody to appear in court again via videolink on August 27, court officials said.

On Thursday, PSNI's Detective Chief Inspector Chris Millar said the other young child injured during the incident remains in hospital in a stable condition.

“I would like to thank the local community for their unwavering support and patience while we continue our investigation into the tragic events of Tuesday evening and I continue to ask that anyone who has any information to contact us,” added Detective Chief Inspector Millar.

The tight-knit Ardoyne community has been left shocked by the tragedy, as residents continue to leave cuddly toys, flowers and written tributes outside the property.

A vigil was held in baby Liam's memory on Thursday night where his father Liam O’Keefe Snr gave an emotional speech in which he thanked the local community for their support.
