Mum and toddler caught in freak storm as golf ball-sized hailstones smash car

A mum and her toddler were driving home when a freak storm saw their car pummelled with huge golf ball-sized hailstones.

Don Johnson shared incredible images of the battered Toyota left pockmarked with dents following the hailstorm last week in Canton, East Texas, US.

Residents in parts of the southern state had been warned to seek shelter as hail, tornadoes and thunder approached.

Mr Johnson said his partner and two-year-old son handled the bizarre weather event "like champs" and were unhurt, despite the front and back windows being broken in several places.

In one snap, a hailstone is shown to fill the palm of a hand.

"It was just wife and son in the car and they handled it like champs," he said.

The National Weather Service (NSW) based in Fort Worth, 85 miles to the west, issued its severe thunderstorm on Wednesday.

It forecasted winds up to 60mph and hail the size of a half dollar coin.

But Dallas-based meteorologist Brian James said that the hail would be even bigger.

He tweeted: "Hail golf ball-size or larger almost a certainty. Seek shelter!"

He later added: "This is really cutting it close. Folks on the north side of Canton, I'd get in your storm shelter just to be on the safe side."

The NSW later issued a tornado warning for the same area.

Mark Scirto, a weatherman with KLTV in East Texas, wrote: "The greatest threat will be large hail along with a few isolated tornadoes and very strong thunderstorm winds of 60mph or more.

"Please make sure you have your batteries charged, secure all items outside that might fly around in the strong winds and in case of an isolated tornado, please find your tornado-safe spot.

"A small, windowless, interior room to get to just in case a warning is issued."
