Mum and toddler both injured after 'hit-and-run' near New Ross, Co Wexford

A mum and toddler are recovering after been injured in an alleged hit-and-run on a busy stretch of national road.

The crash occurred in the middle of the traffic calming area during an annual all vehicle fundraiser, which had attracted a large crowd to Ballinaboola Village in Co Wexford.

A garda spokesperson confirmed both mother and child sustained minor injuries, saying the collision had nothing to do with the fundraiser.

The spokesperson added that it occurred at around 3.30 pm on the N25, Wexford to Waterford road, near New Ross.

They said: "There was a heavy impact and the woman and her boy were very lucky to escape without serious injury.

"They were left very shaken by the incident."

Emergency services attended the scene and the mother son were assessed prior to going home.

A Renault car, which is believed to have been occupied by two men, crashed into the car and stopped briefly, during which time the driver was told there was a boy inside.

"He fled the scene and headed towards Cassagh. There was a big crowd around.

"The driver showed scant regard for the safety of the woman and child.

"The outcome here could have been much worse.’"

Gardaí are looking for information about the driver’s whereabouts and can be reached on 051 426030.
