Mum and three-year-old son killed after being hit by lorry when their car broke down

A mum and her three-year-old son were killed after a being hit by a lorry when their car broke down, police have said. Nicola Courtney, 34 and Lucas Page, three, died on the A180 near Immingham, Lincolnshire, when the lorry ploughed into their stationary blue Ford Focus on Friday night.

Humberside Police said formal identification has yet to take place, but the mum and little lad, both of Scunthorpe, have been named by their family. The force also released a photo of a smiling Lucas appearing to be playing in a tractor, dressed in wellies and a woolly hat.

A police spokesman said: "Their families continue to be supported by specialist trained officers and partnering agencies and have asked for their privacy to be respected at this incredibly difficult time."

The horror crash happened at around 9.06pm on Friday, the force said. A white articulated lorry, travelling westbound along the A180 between Stallingborough and Brocklesby, collided with the stationary Focus.

Police said the car is thought to have broken down in an active lane of traffic. The A180 is primarily dual-carriageway with no hard shoulder. The force said it had voluntarily referred itself to the police watchdog, the Independent Office of Police Complaints (IOPC) in relation to the collision.

A spokesman added: "The full circumstances of the collision will be established during this complex investigation and we would ask for people not to speculate about the circumstances of the crash. We are continuing to appeal for any witnesses who have not yet spoken to us to get in touch."

Police appealed for motorists with dashcam footage showing the vehicles prior to the crash to get in touch.
