Mum and son, 4, living in car with their possessions after pandemic made her jobless

A single mum and her four-year-old son are living in a car with their possessions after she lost her job in the coronavirus pandemic.

Shelby Hughes says she'd made a life for herself and her little boy, Callen, with a nice house in Berkeley, California.

But when the pandemic hit, it all came crashing down and she said the life she had made is "gone".

Shelby says she lost both her jobs and claims she has been unable to qualify for benefits.

No longer able to afford rent, she and her son packed up their lives and have been forced to move into her station wagon.

"He went from having his own room and going to daycare, seeing his friends, to now just me in the car, going 'camping'," Shelby told ABC 7.

She said she tried to make the car comfortable for him.

"This right here is his playroom, it's got all of his toys. These seats right here, they lay down flat so I just make a bed out of all the blankets."

But Shelby said the nights are frightening with just the two of them alone in her car, parked up at a campsite.

The mum says she puts blankets over the windows to feel safer.

Shelby spoke about how her son is finding it difficult, and doesn't understand why they can't go swimming at a members only club he's spotted.

She said it breaks her heart and makes her feel like a 'failure'.

Shelby says she has to hope and pray she gets help from the state soon.
