Mum and daughter 'told they're registered' - then turned away from polling station

A mum and daughter say they were barred from voting in the general election - despite a council official telling them they were registered.

Susan Riley and her daughter Samantha claim an officer for Bury council in Greater Manchester turned up at their home in October to check the electoral register.

Samantha claims the staff member filled in all of their details on an iPad and confirmed they had been registered.

But when she and her mum visited a local primary school in the Bury North constituency today, they were turned away, according to the Manchester Evening News .

Only Samantha's father Andrew was listed on the register today, while Susan and Samantha were not allowed to vote.

The council today said the mum and daughter never sent in additional details that were required after the initial attempt to register.

Samantha, 25, said: "We moved to our new house and a man from the council visited. As far as I was concerned that was it, I was registered to vote.

"I thought I was registered based on what the gentleman from the council said.

"But at the polling station they said you can't vote if you have not got your name down on the list.

"Only my dad was registered to vote."

She added: "It is frustrating especially with it being such an important election.

"It would have been nice to have my input into the vote. I feel there is nothing I can really do about it.

"He took my details, he said that is it you are on the register - all sorted."

The family are concerned other voters in Bury have also been turned away today.

A spokesman for Bury council said: "As well as a person’s name, the law requires us to have further information such as their National Insurance number in order to put them on the electoral register.

"In this case, that information was not received by us. We therefore wrote to them on October 29 asking for the full information and, when we did not receive a reply, sent them a reminder on 19 November, again, which has not been replied to.

“We are sorry if any resident finds that they cannot vote due to mistakenly believing they are on the electoral register. We would urge all households to check, amend and return the electoral register forms we send out to all addresses each year."
