After the incident Theodoro Tirimou told the ECHO that Simba ran out into Liverpool Road in  Formby  after the wind blew the latch off his garden gate. He said: "We never intended anyone to get hurt, the dog was brought up around children I don’t know what happened yesterday. My mum was cleaning the cage and the dog was in the garden playing.

"The dog was never vicious towards anyone. He got walked every night for two hours. I’ve never mistreated my dogs and never would.

"Thursday was a serious mistake that I wish I could have prevented, but I couldn't. I’m so sorry to those that got hurt, my heart is broken."

Police said that the Simba was 'humanely destroyed' after the attack.

Mrs Tirimou, of Liverpool Road in Formby, will be sentenced at Liverpool Crown court on April 10.
