A mum and daughter came up with a secret code so the young girl could send a message home from her first school trip, even though phones were banned. The mum came up with a genius idea to make sure her child could send a message home and let her know everything is OK, reports YorkshireLive.
Posting to Netmums, she wrote: "My 10 year old daughter – who is in Year 5 – is away in Whitby this week with her school for 3 nights. The children weren't allowed to take a phone so that means no contact which feels really unnatural. Usually, if your kids are staying at their grandparents, or on a sleepover at a friend's house, you would speak to them on the phone, or via text, and speak to the person looking after them, too.
"But, there is a way I've been able to put my mind at rest, after coming up with a little secret code for my daughter to use, to let me know she's happy while away. Luckily, our school take photos of the kids on the trip and post daily on the school's Twitter account, so before she went, I asked her to give me a little 'thumbs up' in each pic if she feels really happy.
"To my delight, at the end of the first day, the first pictures appeared (after me constantly refreshing the schools' Twitter feed!) – and after zooming in to find her within the group shot, there she was, with a big smile and her thumb up! It felt so good to see her so happy. It's such a simple little thing, but it really works. She's remembered our code, and wants me to know everything is good and I can't tell you how much it's put my mind at rest.

"Of course the cynics will say 'what if they forget', or 'what if they don't put their thumbs up, you would worry more' – but you will know your child to know if this would work with them or not. I know she will have been happy doing it while the photo was being taken and I know I was SO happy to see it! A little message from her, to me, despite zero contact. I also did the same with my son when he went last year."
