Mum and baby left 'homeless' after raw sewage and used toilet roll floods council flat

A single mum and her six-month old baby have been left 'homeless' after her flat flooded with raw sewage, excrement and used toilet paper.

Kay Dundon had to move out of her home in Quarmby, West Yorkshire, after the damp in the one-bedroom council flat caused her daughter to become ill.

The 24-year-old moved back with her mother but had a shock when she went back to her flat to collect the post in June and found it covered in sewage, reports Examiner Live .

Kay said a problem with the sewerage that serves her block of flats caused sewage to back up and flood into her flat through her toilet and bath.

She also lost her sofa, clothes and items of sentimental value to mould and sewage.

Although Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing (KNH) cleared some of the sewage from the flat, Kay claims it stinks and she can't face going back there.

She said: "It stinks of poo and there's this foisty smell like a damp cellar. I can't go back there – I can't face it.

"I have anxiety and was getting loads better."

But she added: "It's all gone downhill."

Kay now fears she may have to wait until the end of August until she can move back in.

She says she has been sleeping on her mum's sofa in the house her mum shares with Kay's younger sisters.

Kay said: "It's not fair on my mum; she's poorly. My sisters have got school and we've got all our stuff there in bags.

"I shouldn't have to live like this. I've just had a baby and with a new baby you'd think I'd be happy but I'm stressed and putting stress on everybody else."

KNH, which manages Kirklees Council's housing stock told the Examiner it has tried to contact Kay several times to arrange a deep clean of the property.

A KNH spokesman said: "We absolutely appreciate that the blocking of Miss Dundon’s toilet and subsequent sewage in her bathroom must have been a horrible experience for her which we sincerely apologise for.

"As soon as this was reported to us on June 18, we sent an emergency plumber around to her home on the same day to unblock the toilet and clean away the sewage and have made attempts to contact her on a number of occasions to arrange a deep clean of the property."

The spokesman added: "We have previously investigated and treated damp in Miss Dundon’s flat and ventilation fans are being fitted in the property. We are also working closely to assist her with moving to a property more suitable for her needs."
