Mum, 56, and daughter, 16, killed as car crushed by falling tree in Cotswolds

A mother and her 16-year-old daughter died when their car was crushed by a falling beech tree in the Cotswolds.

Wet weather has been blamed for the horror incident which happened on the B4077 at Stanway Hill, near Winchcombe, in Gloucestershire at about 10pm on Thursday.

The 56-year-old mum's car - thought to be a Land Rover Freelander - appeared to be flattened across the middle and was covered by a tarpaulin when it was removed on the back of a truck on Friday.

The tree was on land owned by Lord Wemyss, who said he had applied to the county council to fell trees along the road just hours before the tragedy, GloucestershireLive reports.

It is the second time in less than six months that a tree has fallen onto the road.

After Thursday's incident, the road was blocked for more than 18 hours as police carried out an investigation and the tree was cut into pieces and removed.

Lord Wemyss, who owns the Stanway Estate, said: “I am very saddened at this tragic accident. I extend deepest sympathy to members of the family.

“Stanway Estate, which owns the fallen beech tree, has since 2007 professionally assessed the condition of the trees on Stanway Hill, and regularly fells suspect trees.

"The latest assessment was in 2018.

“The estate applied only yesterday (Thursday) to the county council for permission to close Stanway Hill to traffic, in order to carry out further tree felling for safety purposes.

"It is likely that the very wet recent weather was a cause of the accident.”

A Gloucestershire Constabulary spokesperson said: "Two people who died after a tree fell on their car on the B4077 at Stanway Hill are thought to be a mother and her teenage daughter.

"Although formal identification is yet to take place, police believe a 16-year-old girl and 56-year-old woman died in the incident.

"Their next of kin has been informed."

A spokesman from Gloucestershire County Council said: “We are shocked and saddened by this awful accident.

“We send our sincerest condolences to those connected to the people who were tragically killed.”

It emerged that the incident is the second time in less than six months that a tree has fallen across the B4077 in the Stanway area.

In June, NHS Consultant Psychiatrist Dr George Theodoulou had a lucky escape as he drove round a bend in the same area to find a tree had just fallen across the road.

Sharing a photo on Twitter at the time, he wrote: "Cutsdean to Stanway half way down the hill. Tree had just fallen. Thankful that I was driving slowly."

Speaking after Thursday's incident, he said: "The road feels more dangerous than other roads but because it is steep, narrow and has sharp bends in places.

"Many people tend to drive too fast round there, in my experience.

"I was thankful I was driving slowly on the day I saw a fallen tree, as I guess I could have driven into it.

"I'm sorry to hear about the two people who died."
