Mum, 49, fighting for life after being kicked in the head by a horse

A mum is fighting for life after being kicked in the head by a horse.

Sharron 'Shaz' Quigley was injured at a show jumping event and was taken to hospital.

The experienced equestrian reached in to a horse lorry for a lead-rein when a horse inside kicked out at her.

She was taken to hospital after the accident on July 3 and placed in a medically induced coma to save her life.

The 49-year-old from Owestry, Shropshire, remains in a coma at Royal Stoke University Hospital but is breathing on her own and her family are hopeful that she will make a full recovery.

Show Groom Daniella Jones works at Sharon's stable yard.

She told BirminghamLive how the accident happened: “She was at a show called Southview in Cheshire with Ella and the horses.

“It was such a horrible freak accident. Horses of course have a mind of their own so you can’t let yourself forget how dangerous they are.

“She was transferred to Stoke hospital. She was in intensive care but has now been moved to level one which is slightly less serious.

“She’s had an operation to reconstruct her face and head and she is now in a natural coma.”

"Shaz is breathing for herself now, she’s opening her eyes slightly and she’s moving as well.

"It's a waiting game now to see when she will wake up. She’s been the same really since her op so it’s just tiny little steps."

Daniella has worked at the stable yard owned by Shaz and her husband Dave for two years.

The 20-year-old-said: “Working here feels like family to me.

“I wanted to give something back to the people who saved my boss’s life so decided to run three-miles a day for a month.

“The support has been overwhelming. I wasn’t expecting to reach my £1,000 goal so it has been incredible to raise even more than that.

“The money is going to the NHS and to the hospital where Shaz is. Everyone has chipped in, and it feels amazing to be able to thank the nurses and doctors with the donations.”

Daniella said that seeing an experienced equestrian involved in an accident has hit home how dangerous horses can be.

She said: “The yard has 16 horses and I’m definitely more cautious around them now.

“The horse that kicked Shaz was half owned by someone else and how now been moved to their yard.

“The mare was very fresh and so we were always a bit wary with her.

“She had become more chilled recently, but it is one of those things, accidents happen.”

Shaz’s 17-year-old daughter Ella and husband Dave have received many well wishes since the mum was injured.

Daniella added: “Everybody in the equestrian community has been so supportive with cards and supportive messages to Shaz’s family.

“A Scottish horseshow raised over £100 and an artist donated fifty percent of the price of ten portraits signed by famous riders.

“It’s so nice to know that you have the support of so many people behind you.”
