Mum, 34, reveals heartbreak after giving birth to stillborn daughter

A mum has revealed her heartbreak after giving birth to her stillborn daughter.

Katie Wormall, from Grantham, Lincolnshire, was full of hope and excitement for the arrival of her second daughter which she was expecting with partner Jermaine Devonish.

However, on November 20, the 34-year-old noticed her baby hadn’t kicked and immediately contacted her local hospital.

Staff explained the hospital didn’t have the facilities to give her the checks she needed and advised she make the journey to Lincoln.

The retail assistant grew increasingly concerned throughout the day and made the decision to travel 50 minutes in car to be seen.

Doctors revealed the devastating news that her baby had died.

“I had waited nine years to meet the right person and to go and have another child,” she told Lincolnshire Live .

“It wasn’t a decision I made lightly.

“My daughter was really excited to have a sibling. She is nine and most people have a sibling quite close.”

She added: “They told me there was no heartbeat, there was no movement and she was dead.

“It just felt like I was in a nightmare. You don’t think it will happen to you.

“They give you a tablet to take that terminates the pregnancy. Even after you take it you are just hoping it’s not real.”

Miss Wormall was told to take three tablets to help bring on the labour.

Two days later, her daughter, Nevaeh (heaven spelt backwards) was stillborn, and the mum says it was an extremely emotional time.

“She looked just like a baby,” she said.

“In one of the pictures we have she looks like she is smiling.

“You just try to understand why it has happened and why she has stopped breathing when she looks so perfect.”

The family have since returned to Lincoln County Hospital in order to arrange their daughter’s cremation, however, they have declined to have a post-mortem.

UK law entitles a mum, who has endured the tragedy of a still-birth, to still receive the full nine months of maternity leave from work.

Feeling like returning to her job would be too difficult, Miss Wormall has now decided to use her pain and grief to help others.

She has decided to use her time off from work to design gowns and clothing for babies who are stillborn so that mums can put their child in something they feel is suitable.

“I found the thought of having the time off really daunting,” she said.

“I thought what am I going to do for nine months when I haven’t got the baby?

“I wanted to keep myself busy but at the same time help other people.”

She added: “Before I went into labour I didn’t know what to expect in terms of the size of my baby.

“The clothes you have are for a full-size baby, not one who is six-months-old. They are all too big.

“The hospital offered me an outfit to put Nevaeh in and we were really grateful but if it was my choice we wouldn’t have placed her in that.

“I want to make some gowns suitable for that gestation. I want to make something made with love for that specific requirement and so they have more choice as well.”

The  mum  says she hopes to make the gowns herself and has been in contact with a woman, who specialises in making baby clothes, to get guidance and help to do it.

Miss Wormall also hopes by sharing her heartache, other mums won’t feel so alone having gone through a similar kind of tragedy.

“You don’t expect to have a child who is stillborn and you don’t know how to deal with it afterwards,” she said.

“These outfits will show the babies are still being acknowledged.”

A Gofundme page has been set up by Miss Wormall to help support her ambition.

Within three days she has already smashed her £100 target with £675 already being raised.
