Mum, 24, shot dead while shielding one-year-old daughter from gunfire

A mother was shot dead at point-blank range when she tried to shield her one-year-old daughter from gunshots.

The heartbreaking incident happened last Tuesday when Brittany Hill was approached by two men in Chicago, USA.

Leaked surveillance camera footage shows the 24-year-old getting out of her black Sedan while holding her daughter in her arms.

Two men can then emerge from a silver car. They quickly approach Brittany and start shooting at her.

The frantic mum tried to take cover behind a car and used her body to shield her daughter from the gunfire.

But she she was shot in the torso and later died at the hospital, according to CBS 2 Chicago.

Brittany's partner, Jacob Jones, said: "I was talking to her when they pulled up on the side of my car and opened up fire. My baby is gone."

The Chicago police department said the incident happened in the area of North Mason Avenue, on the far West Side, around 8:50am last Tuesday.

Officers have arrested Michael Washington, 39, and Eric Adams, 23, and charged them with first-degree murder in connection with Brittany's death.

Police are also investigating how the footage ended up on social media.

Police spokeswoman Michelle Tannehill said: "We have notified the state’s attorney’s office and opened an investigation to determine who electronically accessed the video and whether anything was released or compromised."

Irv Miller, legal analyst from CBS 2, said the leaked footage could complicate the prosecution of the case as it could make it difficult to find an unbiased jury.

Mr Miller said: "This is a major misstep by somebody in law enforcement. It has to come from the Chicago Police Department or someone at the states’s attorney’s office.

"By having this leaked, to have the public see it now could result in problems later on in the trial because jurors, and we’re all potential jurors, can’t be exposed to things like this prior to the trial."
