Florida: 22 people injured after gas explosion rocks busy shopping centre

Some 22 people have been seriously injured after a gas explosion at a shopping centre.

Shoppers and residents nearby heard a "bomb-like sound" and felt their homes shake in Florida.

It is understood the blast happened at The Fountains shopping centre in the Plantation area of the city at around noon (5pm UK time), which is home to an LA Fitness gym.

"A bomb just went off," a man says in a video online.

Local media reports the source of the blast was in a vacant pizza restaurant premises.  

Plantation Fire officials tweeted multiple patients are being treated but the nature and extent of these injuries are not yet known.

Joel Gordon, battalion chief for Plantation Fire Service, said 22 people have been hurt, two of whom seriously so.

"Avoid the area of University Drive and Peter's Road. Fire and PD are working an incident involving an explosion. Command post is set up on S. University Drive in the 800 block. Media Command post set up north of this location," police tweeted.

Another resident tweeted: "I live a mile at most from today's gas explosion in Plantation. Heard the bomb-like sound. Felt my house shake. Multiple injuries being reported. Praying nobody was killed, and that no one you know was nearby and affected." 

One person wrote: "My jaw is dropped."

Another shared: "That explosion shook my entire house. I live a mile away & my fan shook so hard I thought it was going to fall."

Lynn Kline, owner of a salon near the explosion, said she grabbed her customers and ran out the back door, some with half-haircuts and foil still in their hair.

Dramatic photos show the huge devastation the blast has caused.

Homes and other buildings are pictured as rubble.

And videos show windows blown out of a gym near the shopping centre.

Debris is strewn all over a car park in another shocking clip.

Roads remain closed across the city.

The plaza is home to popular shops, restaurants and the fitness centre.

Authorities are continuing their operation.
