Gardai confirm three elderly women dead after horror crash at Loughill, Co Limerick

Three elderly people have died following a horror road crash in Co Limerick.

The three women, all in their 70s, died after the two vehicle crash which happened on the N69 in the Loughill area of the county.

Gardai in Newcastle West are investigating the fatal road traffic collision that occurred at around 6.30pm on Thursday.

One of the women killed in the collision was the sole occupant of one of the cars.

The driver of the second car, as well as a second passenger, were also pronounced dead after the crash. A third passenger was taken to University Hospital Limerick with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

A garda spokesperson said: "The road is currently closed to facilitate a Garda forensic collision examination and local diversions are in place. 

"Gardaí are appealing for anyone with information in relation to this collision or anyone who may have dash cam footage to contact Newcastle West Garda Station on 069-20650, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station."

A garda spokesperson previously said: "Due to a serious Road Traffic Collision, this short stretch of road is closed, diversions are in place.

"Emergency Services are in attendance. Thank you for your cooperation."

AA Roadwatch said: "A section of the N69 is closed both ways at Loghill due to a collision. Gardaí are diverting traffic."
