'Multiple people killed' as truck ploughs into standstill traffic on interstate

A truck has ploughed into a queue of standstill traffic on an interstate killing multiple people in the USA.

The crush of 12 cars and at least three lorries has been described as a scene of "true carnage" by police.

According to USA today, the lorry "roared up the right lane, past a traffic jam before slamming into the waiting vehicles."

One of the trucks was carrying diesel, which poured all over the road, causing multiple fires and explosions.

Another was carrying huge planks of wood.

Thick black smokes was sent across the city of Denver, Colorado, from the crash on the Interstate-70.

Eyewitness Brian Dickey told KMGH news: "The back of my truck lifted up and shoved me forward, and I was hitting other cars.

"When I came to a stop I look in my rear view mirror and all I saw was a bunch of flames.

"And I jumped out of the vehicle as fast as I could.

"There was so much fire at the time that I couldn't even really approach any of the other vehicles to see if there was any other survivors or what."

The crash happened at around 4.30pm local time on Thursday.

The driver of the truck survived the crash and was taken to hospital and is set to be interviewed by police.

Investigators were trying to determine if brake failure or mechanical problems kept the truck from stopping.

Ty Countryman, a spokesman for the police department in Lakewood, Colorado, said it was not immediatly clear how many people had died, due to the ferociousness of the fire.

A firefighter was hit by debris, possibly an exploding tire, while tackling the blaze. His injuries were described as minor.
