Multiple injuries, homes destroyed after tornado rips through suburban Chicago area

At least six people were injured, including one critically, and dozens of homes were damaged after a tornado ripped through two towns in the Chicago suburbs on Sunday night.

The National Weather Service said a powerful storm brought a tornado Woodridge, Ill., about 30 miles southwest of Chicago, at about 11 p.m. on Sunday. Along the way, the storm also caused injuries and damage in nearby Naperville. The storm traveled east and ended around 1 a.m. early Monday.

People reported damaged roofs, broken windows and felled trees as well as downed power lines and gas leaks.

“It was actually dead calm when I stepped out,” one resident told NBC Chicago. “The next thing I know the wind almost instantly picked up, trees were bending... We lost the flagpole in our front yard.”

According to the Chicago Tribune, the storm is still being investigated but could be classified as an EF-2 or EF-3 on the Enhanced Fujita scale that measure wind speeds. The strongest storms on the scale are classified as EF-5.
