Multiple flood alerts issued as Storm Ellen's rain and strong winds combine with high tides

Five flood warnings have been issued in Wales as preparations are made for Storm Ellen.

Natural Resources Wales (NRW) put the alerts in force on Wednesday evening.

They remain in place until Sunday and the peak of the risk in water levels is expected to be on Thursday evening and into Friday.

Tide levels are predicted to be high during the alert period, while strong winds are expected to create “moderate to large” offshore waves.

The flood alerts are in place at the same time that parts of Wales are also subject to a yellow weather warning for wind issued by the Met Office. That will last until 4am on Friday and affects western parts of the country, before a second warning comes into force covering the whole of Wales later on Friday.

As for the flood alerts issued by NRW, they are in force in five locations, between the Gower in Swansea and further west in Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire

The areas affected are:

- The Ceredigion coast between Clarach and Cardigan

- The North Gower Coast at Crofty

- Swansea Bay and the Gower peninsula coast between Pontarddulais and Llantwit Major

- The Pembrokeshire coast between St Dogmaels, Cardigan and Amroth

- The Carmarthenshire coast between Pendine and Hendy, east of Llanelli

A spokeswoman for NRW said: “High tides are predicted over the next few days until Sunday (August 23). The peak of the tidal risk is likely to be in the evening of Thursday through to Friday. Tide levels will be high over the entire period on each high tide, and the winds are forecast to be force 4-5 through the period.

“Offshore waves are expected to be moderate to large. Be careful on beaches, promenades, coastal footpaths, roads, low lying land, close to the estuary.

"Be careful as sea spray and waves could be dangerous and could contain debris, particularly in exposed locations. Please take additional care over the periods of high tides due to the risk of debris and wave overtopping at exposed locations.”
