At least six people died in a fatal Greyhound bus crash in New Mexico on Thursday afternoon, police said.
Forty-nine people were aboard the bus, which was headed from St. Louis to Los Angeles, when it collided with a semitrailer in Gonzales on Thursday afternoon.
New Mexico State Police said later that the semi-tractor-trailer blew a tire and crossed into oncoming traffic, where it collided with the bus, according to a preliminary report.
The Gallup Indian Medical Center told KOAT-TV that 37 patients were brought the hospital and six of those, including a baby, were transferred to other hospitals for trauma care. It's unclear if other hospitals received additional victims.
"The total number of injuries has not been determined at this time and we are fully cooperating with local authorities," Greyhound said in a statement to the New York Daily News.
"Our first priority is taking care of our passengers and their families as this incident has deeply impacted all involved. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone as we continue to give our support to all affected."
The National Transportation Safety Board said it was also launching an investigation into the crash.
