Multiple crews bring major industrial fire under control at Rocklea in Brisbane's south

Fire has badly damaged a scrap metal recycling business at Rocklea in Brisbane's south after a large industrial blaze broke out.

Eight fire crews and more than 40 firefighters were called to the scene at about 3:30pm on Ashover Road near the Archerfield Airport.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) said two large sheds were alight with more than 100 tyres inside, sending thick black smoke into the air.

The Queensland Ambulance Service said paramedics assessed two patients at the scene for minor respiratory issues.

The blaze has since been contained.

While some held fears for a petrol station located next door to the recycling business, authorities said  it was "never in danger".

Mr Stafford said he was unable to get home due to road closures.

"They've got fire hoses all over the road. I'm blocked in now so I'll just wait it out," he said.

QFES Inspector Timothy Clark said tyres, plastic, car components, fuel and gases from vehicles were among the ingredients that caught alight.

"One of the occupants said there was over 100 tyres in there, which was part of the assessment," Inspector Clark said.

Authorities said nearby residents were urged to close windows and doors, while motorists were told to avoid the area.

However, the risk posed by the dark smoke plumes to those nearby subsided within hours.

"There is no smoke hazard anymore. We had to be very careful — there's volumes of smoke that were being produced from those products affecting neighbouring properties," Inspector Timothy said.

"Also we're right next to the Archerfield Airport so we were concerned about flight paths."

QFES said investigators would be working to determine the cause of the blaze.
