Multiple bodies have reportedly been discovered in Paramoor Woods near Sticker in Cornwall.
During a police investigation into a missing man, police officers reportedly uncovered multiple bodies shortly after finding the body of Daniel Coleman, 43.
The Devon and Cornwall Police found the body of the 43-year old who was reported missing from St Austell in Cornwall last month.
Three weeks later, the local police and crime commissioner Alison Hernandez said the force has found several other bodies in the area.
It is not clear how many bodies there are or how long some of them have been there.
A probe has now been launched with officers now working to establish the number of bodies in the area.
Forensic teams and police tents have been spotted in the area. The National Crime Agency is also assisting with the operation.
Ms Hernandez said: "We’ve got a huge forensic tent down there. Lots of forensics officers, obviously we’ve found dead bodies in that wood.
"We’re just trying to establish how many there may be at this point in time and whether we are aware of who they are or what might have happened to them. So we also don’t know how long they may have been there, some of them."
She added: "As you know there is a large crime scene that has been identified in Cornwall that is requiring a lot of effort to even scene guard the area.
"I know there’s been some information in the media.
"Until some of those elements have been established of exactly what we’re dealing with there, it will be made public at that time."
Detective Superintendent Jon Bancroft of Devon and Cornwall Police has refuted these claims, sustaining that only one body has been found in the woodland.
Det Supt Bancroft said: "I can categorically state that we have recovered remains believed to be those of Daniel Coleman only from an area of woodland in Sticker. No other remains have been located at this scene to date
“It is imperative that we continue to respect the integrity of the formal court process and ensure the administration of justice is not compromised in any way
“We are continuing with a forensic examination of the scene which is being carried out slowly and methodically.
"Our teams of officers and staff are being assisted by the National Crime Agency expert group and Home Office-approved scientists.
"A significant police presence will remain in the Sticker area as we progress our inquiries expeditiously.
"I continue to ask that people do not speculate on social media about this case."
