Well this is bad.
The NFL’s overtime rules changed last year for the postseason, and those applied to the Super Bowl: No matter what happens in the first possession of the extra period — field goal, touchdown, except for a defensive score — the other team will get a possession to try and tie or win.
Here’s where it gets bad: There were multiple Niners players who admitted they didn’t know those rules, which is an indictment of San Francisco’s coaching staff and NOT a good look. With lots of questions swirling over why Kyle Shanahan elected to take the ball first, it’s even worse.

“I didn’t even know about the new playoff overtime rule, so it was a surprise to me,” Niners defensive lineman Arik Armstead said. “I didn’t even really know what was going on in terms of that.”
