Multimillion-dollar plan to revamp empty public housing

Hundreds of vacant public housing properties would be refurbished and tenants with complex needs would receive more support under a state Labor election promise.

South Australia's Labor government has pledged to spend $30 million repairing and upgrading 300 disused Housing Trust properties to reduce public housing vacancy rates if it is re-elected in March.

It would also spend $110 million to create 200 supported accommodations for complex tenants to help "prevent antisocial behaviour before it starts".

The pledge came as the SA Liberal Party announced on Thursday it would offer a $10,000 bonus to new apprentices aged 21 and older, payable on completion of an apprenticeship, if it won government.

SA Liberal leader Ashton Hurn said the $10 million program would deliver up to 1000 skilled workers to the civil construction and residential building industries.

"The only way to build more homes is by getting more South Australians on the tools as quickly as possible," Mrs Hurn said.

The party says its Boosting SA Apprentices Program has now outlined $130 million in funding across the next four years.

Labor has announced a series of housing policies including a $1 billion Fast Track program to identify strategic infill sites and accelerate development, a rent-to-buy program, and the abolition of stamp duty for homeowners older than 60 who buy new, smaller homes.

The South Australian Council of Social Service welcomed Labor's public housing commitment but chief executive Dr Catherine Earl said data showed there was not enough public and community housing being built.

"We need substantial, ongoing investment to rebuild our social housing stock," she said.

The council calculates SA needs to build about 350 public and community housing dwellings per year to keep pace with population growth.

South Australian voters will head to the polls on March 21.
