Multi-vehicle crash on M74 leaves a number of people hospitalised

'A number' of people are in hospital after a multiple-vehicle horror crash on a major Scots road.

We told earlier today how emergency services had raced to the M74 near junction 16 at Johnstonebridge following reports of a collision at around 2.10pm.

The road was closed but the carriageways reopened at 4.25pm.

Police have now confirmed there have been a 'number' of people taken to hospital with injuries and that 'several' vehicles were involved.

It is unclear how many vehicles were involved or how many are in hospital at this time.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “We were called around 2.10pm on Friday, 26 March, to a report of a road crash involving several vehicles on the M74 near junction 16 at Johnstonebridge.

`'Emergency services attended and a number of people were taken to hospital.

"The road was closed but both carriageways reopened around 4.25pm."

A second car accident had also occurred in the road southbound but has been moved to the hard shoulder to allow traffic to pass.
