Multi-vehicle crash on M1 between Junctions 22 and 23 led to motorists being trapped overnight

A multi-vehicle crash on the M1 in the East Midlands led to motorists being trapped on the road overnight.

A lorry and a number of other vehicles were involved in the collision shortly after 12midnight on Saturday, March 27, Leicestershire Live reports.

The incident happened between Junction 22 and Junction 23 of the northbound carriageway.

Two lanes of the southbound carriageway also had to be closed while the emergency services worked at the scene.

No specific details of injuries or how many vehicles were affected were given, however, Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service said two 'walking wounded' had been treated by paramedics.

Leicestershire Police posted at 6.15am that the closure was expected to be in place for 'at least' another two hours.

Shortly after 6am, Highways England posted on social media: "The stuck lorry that was preventing trapped traffic from being released has now been un-stuck, and the trapped traffic is now being escorted in groups back to the previous junction in order to exit the M1.

"Thank you for your patience."

Shortly before 1am, firefighters confirmed they had freed a casualty from one of the vehicles. Paramedics from East Midlands Ambulance Service treated two 'walking wounded', according to a bulletin from Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service.

The fire service added its crews from Loughborough, Coalville and Leicester had made all the vehicles safe.

The following diversions were in place:

  • Exit the M1 northbound at J22 and take the second exit at the roundabout onto the A511 westbound (Little Shaw Lane)
  • Continue westbound on the A511, passing through Coalville until the junction with the A42 (at J13)
  • Take the third exit and join the A42 northbound
  • Continue on the A42 northbound and then merge back onto the M1 northbound at J23A (near East Midlands Airport)
