Multi-car crash on A19 in Killingworth after vehicles move to give way to ambulance

A crash took place on a busy North East road after cars made way for an ambulance to get through.

The collision, involving a number of vehicles, took place on the southbound A19 in Killingworth at around 8.10am on Friday.

Police said cars had moved lanes to allow an ambulance to pass on blue lights.

Then a vehicle in the outside lane collided with a number of other cars.

The ambulance was not involved in the crash but did stop to check on those involved. There were no reports of any serious injuries.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "At about 8.10am we received a report that a number of vehicles had been involved in a collision on the southbound carriageway of the A19 near to the junction for Killingworth.

"It was reported that a number of vehicles had moved lanes to allow an ambulance to pass on blue lights.

"However, as some of the drivers have made way for the ambulance, a vehicle in the outside lane has collided with a number of vehicles.

"The ambulance was not involved in the collision but did stop at the scene to check on those involved. Thankfully nobody has reported to have suffered any serious injuries."

One lane remained closed while emergency services were on scene and there was traffic congestion in the area.

Enquiries into the circumstances around the collision are ongoing, police say.
