A search operation has been launched for a man last seen entering the water late at night in a midlands village.
The man was spotted entering the River Shannon in Rooskey, Co Roscommon some time on Thursday night.
It is reported that the coastguard helicopter R118 from Sligo was alerted to the scene and helped in the search until around 2am on Friday morning.
The search efforts recommenced after sunrise on Friday, with divers from the Garda Water Unit currently combing a stretch of the river as part of the search.
Members of the Civil Defence and local fire service are also assisting in the operation.
A garda spokesperson said: "A search is currently under way for a male who is understood to have entered the River Shannon in the area of Rooskey Co Roscommon overnight.
"Gardaí are being assisted in this search operation by members of the Civil Defence, the Fire Service and the Garda Water Unit."
