If you want a trendy hairdo it’s time to bite the bullet – and get yourself a mullet.
The once-derided 1980s style – short at the sides, long at the back – is back in style, with one in seven men and one in 10 women now growing one, research has found.
Said to have been invented by actor Kiefer Sutherland for his look in 1987 movie The Lost Boys, it is enjoying a resurgence thanks to TV shows and celebrities sporting the look – among them, Stranger Things star Dacre Montgomery-Harvey, who plays Billy Hargrove, and world No3 golfer Cameron Smith, from Australia
Female devotees include singers Billie Eilish, Miley Cyrus, Rihanna and Dua Lipa and actress Cara Delevingne. A Uswitch poll of 1,000 men and 1,000 women found 23% in all – 14% of men, 9% of women – were growing one.
An estimated 1.5million Britons already have a mullet and experts reckon it takes around six months to grow a ‘proper’ one.
Designer Steve Craig, 34, of Leeds, said: “Everything comes back around and the mullet is clearly now back in fashion.”
Hairstylist Gemma Ware, 31, of St Albans, Herts, said she is growing one, adding: “It’s a great look when it’s done right. I’m not going full mullet, just semi-mullet with hair down just to my shoulders and short on top.”
Bosses at USwitch put the rise in popularity down to the new series of Netflix 1980s sci-fi hit Stranger Things. Spokesperson Catherine Hiley said: “It has influenced a revival of 80s fashion, including denim vests.”
