Fans are reacting to the first trailer for Disney’s forthcoming live-action remake of the 1998 animated film Mulan.
Shared halfway through the Fifa Women’s World Cup on Sunday 7 June, the trailer suggested that, unlike recent remakes of Aladdin andThe Lion King,Mulanwill not be a musical.
Fans have still been mostly positive about the first glimpse of the movie, which shows off the film’s stunning cinematography along with what look like a series of impressive stunts.
However, there has been some upset after it was noted that the character Mushu – a dragon voiced by Eddie Murphy in the 1998 film – does not make an appearance in the trailer.
While this might not be a surprise to many (director Niki Caro said her version would be a “muscular piece of girly martial arts extravaganza in China”) some viewers still vented their frustration at not seeing one of their favourite characters from the animation.

“The eldest daughter of an honoured warrior, Hua Mulan is spirited, determined and quick on her feet.
“When the emperor issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army, she steps in to take the place of her ailing father as Hua Jun, becoming one of China’s greatest warriors ever.”
Mulan is released in cinemas on 27 March 2020.
