Mugger who grabbed 63-year-old walking home from pub is jailed

A man who grabbed a 63-year-old walking home from a pub in Perth and then rifled through his pockets looking for something to steal has been jailed for over a year-and-a-half.

Sammy Townsley (30) grabbed Colin Gorrie near St Paul’s Church then took £10, a mobile phone and a pair of glasses out of his pockets on May 18 this year, Perth Sheriff Court heard last week.

The court heard officers identified him as the robber after reviewing CCTV taken at a pub close to where he grabbed Mr Gorrie.

Townsley, a prisoner of HMP Perth, was said to have an “extensive offending history” when he appeared for sentencing last Thursday.

He admitted assaulting Mr Gorrie by seizing him by his clothing, pulling him close, struggling with him then robbing him in the city’s Old High Street.

Sheriff Eric Brown remarked before sentencing Townsley to serve 20 months in prison: “The public should be able to walk about the streets of Perth without fear of attack by muggers.”
