Mueller statement: Special counsel to make announcement on Trump-Russia investigation today

Robert Mueller is to make a public statement today on his investigation into Russian interference in Donald Trump's 2016 election, the Department of Justice has announced.

In a press release, the department said Mr Mueller would issue his statement at 11am EDT (4pm GMT), but would not be responding to media questions afterwards.

It was not clear what he intended to say but the statement comes amid demands for Mr Mueller to give evidence on Capitol Hill about his findings and tension with attorney general William Barr over the handling of his report.

The Washington Post reported the special counsel would deliver a "substantial" statement, and that it was unrelated to claims in an upcoming book that Mr Mueller drafted indictments against the president before ultimately deciding against charging him.

The explosive allegations were denied on Tuesday by spokesperson for the special counsel’s office, who said those documents “do not exist”.

Mr Mueller's report into Russian meddling in the 2016 election did not find sufficient evidence to conclude the Trump presidential campaign conspired with Russia to sway the presidential election.

It did not reach a decision on whether the president had obstructed justice, but the report laid out multiple instances in which the president attempted to impede or even end the two-year probe.
