A community has been left devastated after a beloved teacher suddenly died just two days after collapsing in front of her students. Adrian Gilmore, who taught Gsixth grade at Albert G. Prodell Middle School in Shoreham, Long Island, sadly passed away on Thursday. The 48-year-old, who was also a football coach at Shoreham-Wading River High School, suffered a medical emergency after school hours on Tuesday, with some pupils witnessing the terrifying scene.
She was rushed to John T. Mather Hospital in Port Jefferson, but despite efforts to save her, she died two days later. Officials haven’t released any details about what exactly happened or the cause of her death, reported the Mirror.
In a heartfelt letter to the community, Shoreham-Wading River Superintendent of Schools Gerard Poole confirmed her passing, writing: “Adrian Gilmore was not only a dedicated and passionate educator, but an outstanding coach, mentor and source of inspiration to many generations of SWR colleagues, families and students.”
He added: “More than her impressive achievements, Adrian will be remembered as a mentor for other coaches and teachers, a passionate advocate for children and a trusted colleague whose impact reached far beyond school walls.”
It’s clear from the outpouring of grief that Adrian was hugely loved. A GoFundMe page set up to support her family describes her as “a beloved wife, mother, daughter, and sister, friend, teacher, and coach” who “passed away unexpectedly.”
The fundraiser, which has already raised over $153,400 (£115,225), paints a moving picture of Adrian’s life: “Adrian’s life was a beautiful reflection – full of grace, strength, and a deep love for others. She poured her heart into everything she did, whether she was raising her children, nurturing her students, or guiding her athletes. Adrian wasn’t just a teacher in the classroom or a coach on the field; she was a mentor, a listener, and a light in so many lives.”
It goes on to say: “Now, her husband Tim is walking through an unimaginable season, doing his best to care for their family while grieving this profound loss.”
The community is rallying around her family, with the fundraiser aiming to help with funeral costs, daily needs, and to give her husband and children time to heal. “We believe in the power of community and the comfort that comes through Christ,” it adds.
Shoreham resident Bill Suesser told News 12 Long Island: “I feel sorry for her family. It’s sad. The students will miss a good teacher.” The Shoreham-Wading River School District is now offering grief support to students and staff to help them through the heartbreaking loss.
