Much-loved Liverpool cafe says it has 'not survived Covid' as it confirms closure

A popular Liverpool cafe has confirmed that it has closed its doors for good due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

Hug a Mug, an independent coffee shop based in a listed building in Gateacre, shared the sad news on Instagram.

The cafe, which was Liverpool’s first independent coffee shop to hold Autism Awareness accreditation and is known for serving homemade, fresh food, thanked customers for their support over the last three years.

In a post on Instagram, the team wrote: “We have some sad news to share...we are closing down.

“We have not survived COVID. We thank all of our loyal customers for their support over the past three years.

“This is a difficult time and I will see you all around the village!”.

Throughout lockdown, Hug a Mug also acted as a foodbank , helping those in need by creating packages from donations and delivering them throughout the community.

The team also continued to provide a takeaway menu featuring Hug a Mug favourites and afternoon tea boxes.

In the comments beneath the post, one person wrote: “Oh ladies, this is such terrible news. You did so much for the community. You will be missed.”

Another said: “I’m so so sorry!! It’s veen so great to have you there. And your support during lockdown has been fabulous. There is clearly something amazing around the corner for you guys.”

A third added: “Sad news! So sorry to hear about this. Terrible and uncertain times ahead”.
