Much-loved Edinburgh café announces closure with a 'heavy heart'

A much-loved café in Edinburgh has shocked customers by announcing that it has made the decision to close permanently.

The couple behind the Blue Bear Café in Canonmills took to social media to reveal that they'd taken the decision "with a heavy heart" but that they'd be closing for good on Monday (February 27).

Posting on both Facebook and Instagram, owner David wrote that he and Karen said it was a "very difficult decision" but one that they had to make due to the "economic challenges of the last few years" and the fact it had no longer become sustainable to keep the café going.

They said: "We would like to take the opportunity to thank all our customers over the past six and a half years, for making their custom.

"And a huge thank you to all our wonderful staff who made working at the café such a dynamic and fun place to be. We are grateful for all your hard work and commitment."

The cafe on Brandon Terrace has been popular for its tasty menu of breakfasts and lunches and the fun addition of a table tennis table in the café.

One gutted customer wrote: "I am so sorry to read this. Thank you to the whole Blue Bear team for being such a fabulous local cafe."

While another added: "Really sorry to hear this - had loved popping in and seeing what a fantastic place you had created when I visited Edinburgh. Sending love."

A fan of the cafe from Texas wrote: "My wife and I are so sad to read this. We discovered The Blue Bear on our honeymoon 10 years ago and ate there daily. We had hopes of a 10th-anniversary trip this month (which, for similar economic reasons, isn't happening) and to see you all again. You will be missed!"
