Much-loved Arriva bus driver dies with coronavirus

Emotional tributes have been paid to a popular Arriva bus driver who died with coronavirus.

The bus driver was named locally as Harry McIvor, a driver based out of the Laird Street depot in Birkenhead.

He passed away on Sunday 26 April.

Colleagues, friends and members of the public took to social media to pay tribute to Harry.

His tragic death was confirmed by Arriva on Monday afternoon.

An Arriva spokesperson said: "We are sad to confirm that one of our colleagues based at Birkenhead depot has died of a Covid-19 related illness.

"We are deeply saddened by this loss and our thoughts are with their family and friends at this very difficult time."

In tributes posted on social media, friends and members of the public paid tribute to Harry.

One tribute said: "A friend, a colleague, a bus driver for Arriva has died today from covid 19.

"How real does this have to get. Stay in. Stop social gatherings.

"Don't travel unless absolutely necessary. RIP Harry. My friend."

Another wrote: "RIP to a lovely man Harry. Thinking of his family at this really sad time."

A third user commented: "So sorry for the loss of your colleague Harry.

"Thoughts are with Harry's family and friends."

A fourth person said: "Huge loss, lovely man. Thinking of his family. RIP Harry."

During the coronavirus crisis bus companies have scaled back the frequency of their services but continue to operate key routes for key workers.

Arriva's website states that "the health and wellbeing of our customers and employees remains our primary concern" and that passengers should only travel "when necessary for work, shopping for essentials, or medical appointments."
