The son of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, Alaa Mubarak, came back to the forefront of the political debate due to a number of tweets and comments related to the so-called “Deal of the Century”, in which he asked whether it included a land swap.
Under the pressure of offensive remarks and other comments he described as “skeptic”, Alaa was forced to explain that he was not hinting at Egypt, stressing the “strong role of the Egyptian army in protecting Sinai.”
“Some of the comments included misplaced skepticism,” he said on Tuesday. “Egypt has liberated its entire land and has a strong army that protects it. Egypt is continuing to build Sinai with huge projects, as we saw (President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi’s inauguration of tunnels under the Suez Canal a few days ago), and there is still some controversy about the deal of the century for Arab lands occupied by Israel. How the US will deal with it when announcing the deal?”
Earlier this week, Mubarak's son wrote on Twitter: “What is the truth about this deal? What are its features and its purpose? Who are the parties to this deal? Who benefits from it? Is it a political or economic deal? Is there any Arab land that will be traded under this deal?”
His comments sparked a wave of criticism and strong-worded replies on social media, with some Twitters accusing his father of creating, during his term, an environment that was favorable for the birth of terrorist groups.
