MSU vs. Maryland in jeopardy after COVID-19 outbreak hits Terps

We knew this was a possibility and now it looks like it could be happening — COVID-19 potentially causing the cancellation of a Michigan State football game.

The Spartans are scheduled to head to College Park, Md. next Saturday (Nov. 21) for a battle against Maryland, however, that game is now in jeopardy after the Terps announced a COVID-19 outbreak has halted all football activities. That includes Maryland’s match-up against Ohio State this upcoming Saturday, which has officially been canceled.

A total of eight players have tested positive for COVID-19, according to the release from Maryland. Here’s what Maryland Athletic Direct Damon Evans said in today’s press release:

“There is nothing more important than the health and well-being of our student-athletes, coaches and staff. We realize that this news is disappointing to all of the Maryland fans out there who were looking forward to the Terps taking on an outstanding Ohio State team, but the responsible thing for us to do is pause football activities, given the number of positive cases currently in our program.”

Wisconsin is the only other Big Ten team that has been forced to cancel games this season due to COVID-19. The Badgers’ outbreak occurred shortly after their season-opening win against Illinois on Oct. 24 and resulted in the cancelation of their next two games. Wisconsin is set to finally return to the field this week against Michigan.

If Maryland is in the same situation as Wisconsin, odds are next week’s match-up between the Spartans and Terps will be canceled. There are no definitive reports or signs at this time that’ll be the case, but as of right now things don’t look good.
