MSU Spring Game: Darrell Stewart Jr. leads wide-outs with two TD’s

Like his quarterback Brian Lewerke, wide-receiver Darrell Stewart Jr. had a frustrating, injury-stricken year in 2017-18. Only playing in five games last season, he did have an impressive nine receptions in the Redbox Bowl loss against Oregon, and he continued that momentum into Saturday’s Spring Game.

After seemingly losing some of his burst, largely due to injuries last year, Stewart exploded Saturday, catching five passes for 82 yards and two touchdowns. He looked to have regained all the burst he was lacking last season and could be a huge X-factor for the Spartans out of the slot.

The Senior caught touchdowns from both Brian Lewerke and Rocky Lombardi, outrunning his defenders on each play:

While Cody White will likely be taking over Felton Davis III’s spot as the big-bodied red zone threat, Darrell Stewart Jr. will almost be an extension of the running game for Brian Lewerke, as the quick-footed Stewart has an uncanny ability to find space.

If Michigan State is going to have a chance to compete for a championship this year, they will need Darrell Stewart Jr. to have a similar breakout season like Felton Davis III had early last year, and if he can accomplish that, he very well could find his way to the pro level.
