MSU Hockey earns all three Big Ten stars of the week

Michigan State hockey is off and running with their 2020-21 season. Head Coach Danton Cole is entering his fourth season at the helm with the hopes to continue building the Spartans into a Big Ten contender.

A crucial series with Notre Dame this past weekend was a great point to start turning the season back in the right direction. Michigan State went into South Bend and came away with three points after a 1-1 tie (the team lost the shootout for the extra point), and a 4-3 overtime victory.

Three Spartans, goalie Drew DeRidder, defenseman Tommy Miller and center Tommy Apap were recognized for their performances this past weekend, earning the Big Ten’s first, second and third star honors.

Michigan State came into the weekend series against the no. 16 ranked Fighting Irish with a 2-3-1 record, splitting their two opening series against Arizona State and Ohio State and getting swept by Minnesota, who is currently ranked no. 1 in the nation.

This series is the last of Michigan State hockey for 2020, ending the first portion of the season with a 3-3-2 record. Typical to the Danton Cole era at MSU, the Spartans have been competitive in every game they have played in and will be a tough contender as the season unfolds in the new year.

The Spartans look to make the NCAA tournament for the first time in the Danton Cole era, as well as a strong finish in pursuing a Big Ten Championship.

The Spartans are back on the ice on January 3rd and 4th for a series against Penn State at Munn Ice Arena in East Lansing.
