MSU HC Tom Izzo sounds off on distaste of ‘Transfer Portal’ rules and regulations

Michigan State Men’s Basketball and Head Coach Tom Izzo are currently on their third appeal to gain a waiver on behalf of Joey Hauser’s eligibility to play basketball for the Spartans this season. Tom Izzo is not a fan of the unclear rules surrounding the transfer portal and the waiver process and he spoke his mind around those frustrations at his press conference today.

Of course, Izzo might be even more disgruntled about the rules because he currently has three guys vying for the power forward position who simply are not, in Izzo’s mind, as good of a fit in that position right now as Hauser would be. Izzo was heavily critical of the rules regarding obtaining a waiver, saying it’s frustrating how unclear the rules are:

In terms of the overall transfer situation in college sports, which has also impacted the football program in a big way:

“I hate that word portal. I think it’s ridiculous.”

Izzo also criticized the transfer portal on how it affects players:

“It makes you not work for things, it makes you not appreciate things.”
