MSU Football: Mike Tressel and Brad Salem get raises

After coaching the quarterbacks for the past six seasons, Brad Salem was promoted to offensive coordinator this offseason and he will be receiving a healthy pay bump with the new position.

According to reports from Michigan State and reported initially by The Detroit News, Salem’s salary will be jumping from $402,462 to $517,487. This makes him the second highest paid assistant on the team after Mike Tressel, who also received a boost.

Tressel has been with the program for 12 seasons but has been with Dantonio for 15 straight years. Tressel spent the first 8 years of his career at MSU working with the linebackers and special teams. In 2014 he was promoted to co-defensive coordinator before being named the singular defensive coordinator in 2018. Tressel’s salary was boosted from $572,308 to $667,385.

This is all part of Dantonio’s plan and coaching philosophy. Instead of going out and hiring a high profile coach, he prefers to promote from the inside.
