MSU Football: AJ Arcuri to start at Left Tackle with Cole Chewins out

Ever since Jack Conklin left Michigan State, it has been a troubled era for a position that used to be a strength for the Spartans. For the fourth time in four years (since Conklin left in 2015), Michigan State will enter the season with a different starting Left Tackle as AJ Arcuri will be filling in for Cole Chewins.

Coach Mark Dantonio gave a statement on Chewins’ health at his last press conference:

“He struggled with his back here throughout preseason. Right now he’s sort of on a day-to-day basis, we’ll see where he’s at. We do anticipate he’ll be able to play at some point. He has had some time off here as of late. He won’t play this week.”

Arcuri is a redshirt junior and former 3-star prospect out of Powell, Ohio.

Here is what Dantonio had to say about his new starting Left Tackle:

“He’s been athletic. He’s adapted well to the left tackle position. He’s a big, strong guy. Almost 6-6, 300 pounds or so. He’s learned that position. I think he could play across the board probably any position with the exception of center.”
