MSU Football adds former Mason High School football coach to staff

Mark Dantonio and Michigan State Football has a new on-campus recruiting coordinator in Jerry VanHavel. VanHavel was the head football coach at Mason High School for 26 seasons before becoming the recruiting coach for Mount Union, a private Division III school in Alliance, Ohio. He worked for Mount Union for four years.

VanHavel was the winningest coach in Mount Union school history with a record of 169-88 and was voted regional coach of the year nine times.

VanHavel, who starts July 30th for the Spartan, had this to say about his new position:

“I am so fortunate to join the Spartan family,” VanHavel said. “Thank you to everyone who helped me get here.”

He also said that the job is “the chance of a lifetime and the last professional stop of my life.”

The role was previously held by Garrett Briningstool but he has recently transitioned over to the men’s basketball team.
