MSPs to be sworn into parliament by pledging allegiance to Queen

MSPs are set to be sworn into the Scottish parliament today for the start of the sixth term following the election on May 6.

All newly elected and returning members of parliament in Scotland will have to pledge their allegiance to the Queen - and if they don't within a two-month period then they will cease to be an MSP.

The outgoing presiding officer Ken Macintosh will preside over the oath taking ceremony which is expected to be his last job in office before he steps down.

A new presiding officer is excepted to be announced later today as well with the deputy to be appointed on Friday, May 14.

SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon is set to be sworn in first followed by the leaders of the main political parties in the chamber.

After that the remainder of the 129 MSPs will either take the oath or affirmation.

It's up to the MSP about if they take the oath or the affirmation.

If a member fails to take either then they won't be paid or be able to claim expenses. Failure to pledge allegiance to the head of state could see the MSP lose their job if it's not done within two months, however this can be extended if an agreement is reached.

The oath states: "I (Member's Name), do swear that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, Her Heirs and Successors, according to Law. So help me God."

The affirmation reads: "I (Member's Name), do solemnly, sincerely and truly declare and affirm that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, Her Heirs and Successors, according to Law."

The ceremony is set to get underway at around 9am and is expected to last a couple of hours.
