MSPs could get security staff and self-defence lessons to keep them safe

MSPs could get “security operatives” amid concerns about the safety of politicians.

Holyrood bosses are also considering self-defence classes as a way of keeping elected representatives safe from attackers.

An email from the Scottish Parliament 's chief executive office to MSPs has now laid out the measures under consideration.

One strand is for MSPs’ local offices, as well as their main homes and Edinburgh residences, to be “security surveyed”.

Surveys will not be mandatory, but the Parliament expects most MSPs would make use of the service.

Holyrood is also going to widen the provision of “lone working devices” and review arrangements where MSPs work late at night.

In addition, the Parliament’s governing Corporate Body has requested that the in-house security office look into “self-defence and/or de-escalation training”.

The briefing added that a project had been commissioned on whether Holyrood might provide security staff to accompany members at surgery meetings.
