MSP urges East Kilbride folk to have their say in fight to end period poverty

Central Scotland MSP Monica Lennon is urging folk in East Kilbride and Strathaven to have their say on her Bill to help tackle period poverty.

Members of the public are being asked to respond to a call for evidence on legislation to provide free period products.

The Bill by Labour’s Monica Lennon is currently being considered by the Local Government and Communities committee in the Scottish Parliament

The legislation, if passed, will establish a system of universal access to free period products, for example in community centres or pharmacies, for anyone who needs them.

It will also put the provision of period products in schools, colleges and universities on a legal footing.

Ms Lennon said: “Access to period products should be a right and not a privilege but there are many reasons why this is sometimes difficult, such as health conditions, changes in income or domestic abuse.

“My Member’s Bill to introduce free universal access to period products would make Scotland a world leader, ensuring that anyone who needs products will be able to access them in a dignified manner.”

The public is invited to give their views about the Bill and why it’s important by Tuesday, November 5. Email LocalGovernmentandCommunities@parliament.scot
