MSP slams delays to completion of new East Kilbride cycle path

A MSP has slammed delays to the completion of a new cycle path in East Kilbride.

Tory Graham Simpson, who himself is a keen cyclist, also said traffic lights which have been in place since work began in March are causing "needless delays".

The £350K project to construct the next phase of new cycle infrastructure on West Mains Road was due to be completed over the summer but this has now been delayed until the end of next month.

It will provide improved active travel connections to East Kilbride railway station and towards the town centre.

Mr Simpson told Lanarkshire Live : "The council built a cycle lane along part of the same road but this extension seems to be taking forever.

"It has taken more than six months so far. I pass it most days and there are workmen there but go back later and very little seems to have been done.

"There have been traffic lights on West Mains Road and at the station, causing needless delays.

"The council needs to explain what on earth is going on here.

"If the contractors are dragging their feet then they should be given a rocket, or fired.

"This scheme could be good but is needs to be finished soon."

Head of roads and transportation Colin Park said: “The work was scheduled to be completed over the summer but due to supply chain and other resourcing issues caused by the ongoing pandemic the contractor has had to re-programme its completion.

“It is currently anticipated that the project will be completed by the end of September.

“To ensure the safety of the public and those undertaking the works, temporary traffic management requires to remain in place so we ask drivers for their continued patience until these works are completed.”
